Two hundred and forty six bridges in the Miami Valley area are listed as 'structurally deficient' by the Ohio Department of Transportation. There are 77,000 bridges nationwide in this category

Structurally deficient means that the bridge needs significant maintenance, rehabilitaion, or replacement.

In the wake of the Minneapolis bridge tragedy, which has killed five so far, many worry about other bridges on the list around the country.

The Department of Transportation assures that bridges on the list are not necessarily a safety risk. They would close a bridge they knew to be unsafe until it could be repaired or replaced.

It is rumored that inspections on these bridges will become more stringent to avoid another bridge collpase.
