New Island Created in Caribbean

A mud spewing fissure in the ocean floor has created a new island in the Caribbean, five miles northeast of Trinidad. The new island is only a few inches above the ocean but is five hundred feet long.

The new development poses a threat to boats in the area. The gas bubbling up from the ocean floor could cause boats to lose buoyancy or they could run aground into the mud.

The island is expected to be temporary. Already, large waves are washing away some of the mud and the fissure may fade in time.
