Rhododendrons and Azaleas can be grown successfully in Ohio if the following simple steps are followed and maintained:
- Do not plant azaleas or rhododendrons near cement
- well–drained soil works best, soil can should be improved with peat moss (not peat humus which may kill plants)
- Water well after planting and once every 3 - 4 days in hot dry weather the first year after planting
- Do not fertilize
- Mulch with pine bark mulch once a year and after planting. Do not use any other mulch but pine bark mulch
